| The St. Johns River Ferry Dates Back to 1948
The original operation was begun in 1948, when the Fernandina Port Authority completed construction of a road down Ft. George Island. Previously, there had been no road and no water connector between Mayport and the Island. State Road 105 (Heckscher Ave.) ended in the approximate are where the ferries now dock on the Fort George side of the river.
